DPhil Researcher 2015-2019
John's research concerns microstructures and properties of a set of (so-called) High Entropy Alloys (HEAs). These are a relatively new range of metallic alloys in which 5 or more elements are alloyed together in near equiatomic fractions. The name HEA comes from the idea that high configurational entropy in such a system might stabalise it to a single concentrated solid solution. In the vast majority of systems we have looked at this single phase result is not the stable microstructure and much more complex multi-phase microstructures are much more common.
