DPhil 2016 - 2019

Alex's completed his Dphil in the OMG working on the effects of radiation on reaction-bonded silicon carbide using ion implantation, nanoindentation, high angular resolution electron back-scattered diffraction, and Raman spectroscopy. Silicon carbide has potential applications in parts of nuclear fusion and fission reactors, and RB-SiC would be desirable to use as it is cheap and easy to make in large parts. This project aimed to assess the suitability of this material for the extreme environments of nuclear reactors.

The project was supervised by Prof David Armstrong, Prof Richard Todd, and collaborators at Culham Centre for Fusion Energy as part of the EPSRC Fusion CDT.
