Ben first joined the group to do his final year research project with Angus Wilkinson looking at large pop-ins seen in nanoindentations near grain boundaries in BCC metals.  He stayed in the group for a DPhil in which he worked on developement of the HR-EBSD technique; writing the XEBSD matlab code and applying the method to deformation studies in Ti. He then took on a post-doc research fellow position on the Materials for Fusion and Fission Power programme grant.

He moved to Imperial College London in 2012, where he ran the Experimental Micromechanics Group.  In 2021 Ben left the UK to start a new adventure in Canada, joining the department of Engineering Materials microstructure group at University of British Columbia as an associate professor.

In addition to leading scientific contributions, Ben has developed a strong voice advocating for better inclusion, equality and diversity in STEMM.
