2016-2020 DPhil Researcher
Tom worked on Oxide-Dispersion Strengthen (ODS) steels for potential use in structural components in fusion reactors. He used ion irradiation as a surrogate for neutron damage and explored the evolution of fine scale microstructure using atom probe tomography to yield information on clustering, segregation and the chemical distribution of the yttrium-containing nano-oxides. These features could yield vital information to the explanation of hardness changes (gathered by nanoindentation) and fundamental radiation damage mechanisms.
Tom has continued working towards fusion power. He founded Oxford Sigma which aims to develop novel technologies for fusion energy.
